wineshopper-1277148741

It is about time that the members-only flash sale has come to the most popular virtual source for vino. What Tablet Hotel’s private sales are to lodging, Wine.com’s has launched WineShopper.com will be the same for premium wines and champagnes: a place to buy the finest fermented elixirs at up to 70% off during a 72-hour window… or until they sell out. Standard procedure would be to register at the site to receive daily e-mails on sales, but you can also get Twitter notifications or find out the scoops on Facebook. Last we checked, a bottle of Veuve required just $29.99, and a Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cab set you back $49.99. WineShopper is even offering a gift of Riedel glasses if you recommend enough friends to the site, but be sure to think that through – your friends might just make the deal you were after sell out more quickly…

The Million Dollar Wine Cabinet

The Million Dollar Wine Cabinet

The Antique Wine Company has announced the completion of the next four in its series of nine architectural cabinets featuring the most celebrated Châteaux in Bordeaux. The collectors’ items were commissioned by The Antique Wine Company from LINLEY and feature Château d’Yquem, Château Haut-Brion, Château La Mission Haut-Brion and Château Petrus. This follows the Château Margaux architectural cabinet, the first of which was bought by the château itself.

The bespoke cabinets contain 18 bottles of wine, the finest vintages produced during the 20th and 21st centuries, with the Yquem model, shown above, accompanied by a complete vertical collection of Château d’Yquem spanning 141 consecutive vintages from 1868 to the latest current release. This ultimate collection also includes several letters and memorabilia retrieved from the Château archives during the Lur Saluces era and will be sold by The Antique Wine Company during September 2010 by private negotiation and expected to realize a value of over $1 million. The other châteaux are each priced at £149,000.

As Château Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion celebrate the 75th anniversary of the acquisition of Château Haut-Brion by Clarence Dillon, one of the Château Haut-Brion cabinets is being shown for the first time during Masterpiece London, which runs from through June 29. Others yet to be released by The Antique Wine Company in the series are: Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour and Château Cheval Blanc.

Wine Pouches Are Picnic Ready

Glenora Pouch Wine

Wine packaging continues to evolve. We’ve seen more and more wines in boxes and cartons but Glenora Wine Cellars in Dundee, New York is debuting a wine in the AstraPouch pouch. The Trestle Creek Riesling is available in 1.5 liter AstraPouches. Like the wines, the pouches are made in New York.

The pouches provide similar advantages to the bag-in-box but without the box. A one-way spigot keeps oxygen out. The pouches have a modest transportation footprint and chill faster. The light weight also makes them a good option for picnics.

Louis Roederer’s Cristal : One of the World’s Most Prestigious Champagnes

Louis Roederers Cristal

For a champagne founded in the same year as the United States of America, Louis Roederer’s Cristal has changed remarkably little over the years compared to the country across the pond.

Founded in 1776 as Dubois Pere & Fils, the company was renamed after the founder’s nephew, Louis Roederer, who took over in 1833 and renamed the champagne house after himself. One of Roederer’s greatest moves was expanding the brand into Russia. The champagne enjoyed years of success among well-heeled Russians, and Tsar Nicholas II eventually requested a special champagne to be made for the Imperial Court of Russia.

The result was Cristal, a sweet and delicious wine that broke with tradition – instead of being packaged in a dark bottle like, say, Dom Perignon – Cristal came in crystal-clear bottles, hence the name. As legend has it, the transparency was a feature designed so that Tsar Nicholas could tell if somebody was trying to poison his bubbly.

Today, Cristal remains one of the world’s most prestigious champagnes, with vintage bottles fetching thousands of dollars in the auction market. In the 1990s, Cristal became a favorite among hip-hop artists – until American rapper Jay-Z issued a boycott over what he deemed negative comments by Louis Roederer’s director, throwing his support behind another champagne.

Despite the hiccup, Cristal remains a favorite of oenophiles worldwide – and strong as ever in Russia, where a new generation of oligarchs now enjoys it.

Whitesnake Launching New Wine

Whitesnake Launching New Wine

What do pro golfers, porn stars, Oscar-winning actors and rock stars have in common? Celebrity wine. The latest entry into this packed field comes from 1980s hair metal band Whitesnake. Oh yes, they are still around and releasing the Whitesnake Zinfandel 2008 through De La Montanya wines on July 1. The Whitesnake website describes it as a “bodacious, cheeky little wine, filled to the brim with the spicy essence of sexy, slippery Snakeyness,” adding in a play on one of their hits: “Is this love?… I believe it is…” It will sell for around $30.

De La Montanya is a family winery that produces approximately 4,500 cases per year using grapes spanning five appellations from the Sonoma Coast to Lake County in Northern California. This isn’t their first rock star collaboration, they created the 2005 “Wanna Go Back” 2005 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, a collaboration with Eddie Money as well as a wine with Journey.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild : A Wine That Needs No Introduction

Chateau Lafite Rothschild

In 1787, scarcely ten years after some ambitious colonists declared a new country across the Atlantic, a small French winery called Chateau Lafite produced a very special bottle. Little did the resident oenologist know that nearly 200 years later, the bottle would sell for 105,000 pounds – roughly $160,000 – setting the mark for price that has stood since 1985.

When Baron James de Rothschild, a patriarch of the famous European banking family, purchased Chateau Lafite in 1868, it was perhaps a sign of a good investment recognized. But the Baron never saw his purchase bear fruit – he passed away just three months later, leaving the renamed Chateau Lafite-Rothschild estate to his three sons.

Over a century later, Chateau Lafite Rothschild remains one of the world’s most esteemed wine estates, producing some 35,000 cases per year. Much like the record-setting bottle from 1787, even the most recent vintages continue to rapidly appreciate in value – the 2008 Lafite Rothschild was valued at 1,500 pounds upon its release, but bottle prices more than doubled within two weeks. Baron James would be proud.

Rhode Island’s Sakonnet Vineyards For Sale

Sakonnet Vineyards

Christie’s Great Estates is offering a rare opportunity to own an established and award-winning vineyard on the east coast of the United States. Sakonnet Vineyards in Little Compton, Rhode Island, celebrating its 35th anniversary, is being offered for $10.5 million by Christie’s affiliate Lila Delman Real Estate in Newport. Recognized as a pioneer in the New England wine industry, Sakonnet is located in the heart of a burgeoning wine-growing region producing wines under the Southeastern New England viticultural appellation. The property consists of 170 acres of which approximately 37 acres are planted in vines producing an average of 8,000 to 9,000 cases of “Estate Grown” wine annually.

The wines have received national and international acclaim winning numerous medals, including “Best of Show” for a Gewurztraminer at the 2004 Monterey International Wine Competition. Boston Magazine also named Sakonnet “Best Winery in New England” for 2006. The vineyard was founded in 1975 on the well-researched premise that the microclimate and soil conditions found along the Southeastern New England coast closely resemble some of the great wine regions of the world, particularly, the maritime climates of northern France. A residential component contiguous to the vineyard property is located on a plateau of open fields, laced with stone fences that slope gently down to Watson Reservoir.

Jets Uncorked : A Toast to Next Season

jets uncorked

We’re still a few months from football season but New York Jets fans can plan for next season by pre-ordering a new commemorative wine, a 2008 cabernet sauvignon called Jets Uncorked. The wine was created as part of the effort to celebrate the new Meadowlands Stadium.

The wine was made at the Girard Winery in Yountville, California. The wine was created by winemaker Marco DiGiulio and is described as having ripe flavors of red cherries, currants and berries with supple tannins, a touch of oak and a long spicy finish. Around 8,000 cases were made and the wine will be served in some local restaurants come September and is available on the Jets website for August delivery. The label includes a drawing of an actual play run by the Jets in a game.
